DAY 1
Terminal Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the first day, students will:
Have completed registration paperwork and describe the capabilities of the HazCat System.
Be able to describe the HazCat system, terminology, symbols, tools and other materials used in the course.
Demonstrate the ability to identify a few unknown solid substances.
Specific learning goals:
Know the history of HazCat.
Know the evolution of the HazCat System.
Know the difference between hazard categorization and actual substance identification.
Know some of the legislation regulating hazardous materials.
Know the safety practices for use with HazTech technology.
Understand the concept of qualitative analysis.
Understand the HazCat Flow charts.
Describe the three main Gateway Tests.
Demonstrate navigation of the flow charts for identification of unknown solid chemicals.
Demonstrate performance of the three Main Gateway Tests for solid substances.
Know and differentiate between organic and inorganic solid substances.
Know and differentiate between substances that are oxidizers and non-oxidizers.
Know and demonstrate the importance of accurate observations and interpretation of test results, according to HazCat terminology.
DAY 2
Terminal Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the second day, students will:
Demonstrate the three Main Gateway Tests for liquids.
Demonstrate the identification unknown liquid chemicals.
Demonstrate the identification of various unknown acidic chemicals.
Describe the expanded versions of the three Main Gateway Tests that enable identification of thousands of additional chemicals beyond what are listed on the main charts. Identify unknown chemicals utilizing expanded versions of the three Main Gateway Tests.
Specific learning goals:
Understand the HazCat flow charts for identification of unknown liquids.
Understand the importance of accurate observations according to HazTech terminology when conducting the three Main Gateway Tests for liquids.
Navigate the flow charts for identification of unknown liquid chemicals.
Demonstrate performance of the three Main Gateway Tests for liquid chemicals.
Know and differentiate between organic and inorganic liquid chemicals.
Know and differentiate between chemicals that are oxidizers and non-oxidizers.
Understand the importance of accurate observations and interpretation of test results, according to HazCat terminology.
Know some of the different hazards presented by exposure to acidic chemicals.
Demonstrate the use of the supplemental flow charts to identify chemicals.
Demonstrate the use of the expanded Char Test. Demonstrate the use of the expanded Water Solubility Test.
Demonstrate the use of the expanded Oxidizer/Acid Test.
DAY 3
Terminal Learning Objectives:
At the end of the third day, students will:
Possess the ability to identify the different components of organic liquid mixtures.
Be proficient in the identification of different components of organic liquid mixtures.
Specific learning goals: Describe the use of the Organic Analysis Form.
Describe how to determine if a substance is a mixture.
Describe the sum physical, chemical, and hazardous properties that are essential to safe handling, remediation, and disposal of chemicals.
Demonstrate the use of the Organic Analysis Form.
Determine if a substance is pure or a composite mixture of chemicals. Be able to determine the sum physical, chemical, and hazardous properties that are essential to safe handling, remediation, and disposal of chemicals.
DAY 4
Terminal Learning Objectives:
Upon conclusion of the class, students will:
Know techniques to screen for the presence of elemental metals or their ions.
Know how to use the expanded version of the Char Test Complex.
Correctly identify 18 out of the 20 unknown samples handed out in order to pass the class.
Specific learning goals: Categorize unknown substances as organic or inorganic.
Record the results of the tests on the Char Test Exercise Form.
Identify organic substances. Identify inorganic substances.
Identify mixtures. Identify acids. Identify bases. Identify oxidizers.
